tavis: you recall there was a great debate for years over why ronald reagan as president would not say the word aids. was a great debate for years when george bush would not say the phrase climate change. can you ever imagine barack obama now come in a second term, which revealed some believes will free him up, whatever that means, do you ever imagine him saying the phrase, has president, the prison investor complex? >> the way eisenhower once said the military industrial complex and heads turned and some world? i do think so. i know for example that the film has been made available to the president and i hope that come in the coming weeks and months, it will become something that it will not be fighting off just the philistines and washington. i would like him and others around him look at it and look at things like jim crow and take stock of what his legacy will be. barack obama's first administration was a bit of confusion for many of us in the fight against the war on drugs. i spoke to 1/5 person who said i am not a drug czar. that comes from the wrong mindset. don't call it a drug

reagan really took seriously and he triple the national debt of course that is that everybody did and george bush did the same exact thing they do they play this game with the american people but this time in this election the american people actually won what the republicans tried to do they tried to crush them they try to destroy them they tried to stop them. going to the polls they try to put voter suppression laws in place all across the country and we saw turnout even higher than in two thousand and eight because the people the american people are smarter than the republican party thinks they are and will mitt romney make statements about you know how he thinks about immigrants or how he feels about african-americans or how he feels about young women or how he feels about young people if you think that's going to get his party back in power it's the sadly mistaken the republican party has turned into a party that can only control the united states house of representatives if they don't get their act right and they can only do that because a jury matter exactly and you know which

[talking over each other] a big part of it was ronald reagan's in the reform act of 1886 that, you know, increased reductions and what have you. when i got out of school, probably before both of you were born, it was in the middle 20s. and the direction we are going, guys, it will be in the mid- 50s. in the argument of so-called fairness, we are telling, you know, the top few% that pay 43% of all taxes, it is only fair you pay more. i hope it will be a very welcome outcome. connell: largely, i am sure, it is 2% versus 98% when you pull it. it is very popular, the idea of raising taxes on the rich. they favor extending the bush tax cuts except for the wealthy. neil: you assume that the rich guy pay for it. what i would not do at that table, i would not -- about the appetizer. then, what happens is we penalize those who provide -- believe me, i am not one of these, by the way, nothing wrong with that. i just think it is a disjointed argument. one thing romney did get right, although he maybe did not articulate as well as he should have, it is about everyone having a stake in the action. e

ronald reagan decisively won that. we did not want to continue that sad and torn history. it is not like we were naiive about the challenge. for a lot of reasons, not all of them, you know we did not execute. strategicly, myself and others could have done a better job. the president said that he had an off night. it is not like we had one glaring mistake. but not a solid performance. governor romney had a strong performance and we knew that. even when he took a flyer against ted kennedy. he dominated the debate performance. we knew it was a strength of governor romney. just showing up on the stage and, you know, he was going to come out of the debate like that. we knew that. he was too low. romney is always go to get 47 and 48 and 49 in states like virginia and florida and virginia. we were not go to win the first debate. he was the only person on that stage that had something to gain out of the first debate. but obviously we had a poor performance and he had a very strong performance. we said it publicly and most did not believe at the time. i think it is now the truth. t

think of ronald reagan and tip o'neill reforming social security. ronald reagan and tip o'neill doing the last comprehensive tax reform. bill clinton and republican congress doing welfare reform and balancing the budget. we look forward to making this divided government productive for the american people. and we have, of course, as everyone well knows, a lot of challenges here at the end of the year. i'll be meeting with the president and the other leadership on friday to talk about the way forward. and we look forward to being a part of the solution to these significant problems. it's my plesh shoe now to turn to our newly elected whip, senator john cornyn of texas. >> thanks, mitch. it's an honor to be elected by my colleagues to serve as the whip. the assistant leader on the republican side. as leader mcconnell said, we have a lot of very difficult work to do, but we are committed to working with our colleagues across the aisle to solving the nation's urgent problems. we know what those are in the lame duck. we know what those are going forward.
